Springer launches Journal for STEM Education Research

Newly founded Journal for STEM Education Research to be published by Springer Nature as of August 2018

Heidelberg | New York, 10 April 2018

Journal cover: Journal for STEM Education ResearchA new interdisciplinary journal focusing on research in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is now part of the extensive Education & Language portfolio at Springer. The subscription-based journal with open access options complements the open access International Journal of STEM Education published by Springer Nature under the imprint SpringerOpen. The first issue of the new journal will be published in August 2018.

In two issues per year, the journal provides a platform for the investigation of students’ cognitive and non-cognitive development in STEM education at PreK-12 and college levels. Articles explore how specific learning environments can be constructed and provided to facilitate students’ learning and development in STEM, and what possible advantages and disadvantages STEM education might have for students’ learning experience. Sample research topics include curriculum models, innovative pedagogies, the design of and practices within technology-rich learning environments, and the nature and development of teachers’ expertise in STEM education. Scholars from subject areas such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as well as social science fields (e.g. education, psychology and sociology) are encouraged to contribute to the journal.

The journal is led by editor-in-chief Dr Yeping Li, who is professor of teaching, learning, and culture at Texas A&M University, together with associate editor Dr Andrea diSessa from the University of California, Berkeley and international editorial board members.

“It is critical to have a journal that is dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary research on STEM education, and goes beyond the traditional disciplinary boundaries to serve a broad and emergent international research community. The journal provides much-needed support for the ongoing rapid development of integrated STEM education,” said Yeping Li.

Melissa James, senior publishing editor of educational journals at Springer, said: “We are very excited to announce the Journal for STEM Education Research, which promises to be a unique and interdisciplinary platform for sharing and promoting research on teaching, learning, and cognitive development within STEM. The journal serves as a necessary complement to Springer’s ever-growing collection of STEM education books and journals. These publications showcase Springer’s commitment to championing multi-disciplinary and innovative applied research in teaching and learning STEM.”
